15 Things To Do When You Find Out You Are Pregnant

You’re pregnant? Congratulations! Your life is about to change drastically, but all for the better! You will be blown away by what your body is capable of – like growing a HUMAN! You will also be amazed at how much your heart can love. Sure, you love your partner and your family. But the love you have for your own child is overwhelming! In 40 or so weeks, you’ll know what I’m talking about!

I remember when I first found out I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. My husband was in the shower when I took yet another test that I was sure would be negative. But then, it wasn’t!  There were definitely, clearly two pink lines! Finally! 

I had so many ideas for how I would tell my husband that he was going to be a Daddy. But with shaky, excited hands and a quivering voice, I ran into the bathroom and asked if he was going to be done showering soon. My demeanor made him slightly panicked and he came out pretty quickly. It was right there, in the bathroom, while he was toweling off that I told him “I’m pregnant!” While not the most thought out execution, it is a life changing memory that I will cherish forever.

We had the theory of “When it’s meant to be, it will happen.” Well, I’d had enough of that after almost a year and started using ovulation tests to track my cycles. I highly recommend these kits as a first step if you are serious about wanting to get pregnant. I mean, the practicing is fun and all, but I was starting to get impatient. Women can ovulate – the only time you can actually get pregnant –  between 11 and 21 days after their last period starts. Turns out, I was ovulating earlier than I thought. It’s all about timing!

The journey to pregnancy is different for everyone. Some women are surprised completely or get pregnant right away, some – like me – tried for a while, others have to use modern medicine to help get them there – and thank God for modern medicine! Whatever path you took to see those two pink lines, I know your heart is overwhelmed with excitement!

Almost as soon as you first find out you are expecting a bundle of sweetness, you start to experience Mom Brain. Sorry to say, it doesn’t ever go away. You are constantly thinking about what needs to be done and how to do it. So, to start you off on the right foot on your pregnancy journey, I put together this list of things to do during your first trimester!

15 Things to do when you find out that you are pregnant!

The basics

1. Start taking prenatal vitamins. 

As soon as you find out that you are pregnant, you’ll want to start taking a prenatal vitamin. I still take these prenatal vitamins and love them. I never had any issue with constipation which can occur due to the iron in prenatal vitamins. If you do experience constipation with the prenatal vitamin that you choose, take a stool softener such as this one. It won’t make you go, it will just make it easier!

2. Make an appointment with your doctor. 

You doctor will be able to confirm the pregnancy at the office. They may even do your very first ultra sound! The baby will look like a tiny little glob, but that tiny little glob is yours! 

3. Drink more water. 

Pregnant women need to stay hydrated! Drink as much water as you can every day!

4. Change your diet. 

There are a few food restrictions put on pregnant women. Certain fish such as tuna – sushi grade and canned – contains a high amount of mercury that should be limited during pregnancy. Foods that could contain listeria like deli meats and unpasteurized milk or cheese should also be limited. Find a complete list of foods to avoid here. You’ve heard the term “Everything in moderation”? Many of the items on the list don’t have to completely be avoided, but just limited, such as caffeine. 

5. Tame the beast of nausea 

Nausea during pregnancy is commonly known as “morning sickness”. And a man must have coined that term because it would be great if it was over by noon!

Thankfully, for most women, the nausea is gone after the first trimester. But to get you through that first 14 weeks, eating frequent small meals helps to keep the nausea at bay. Also ginger is a great natural way to curb nausea. Trader Joe’s sells ginger mints and ginger tea that were so helpful to me in my first trimester. Ginger Ale and crackers are great for an upset stomach as well. Many women crave only carbs during their first trimester. Give your body what it wants! The alternative is becoming dehydrated and a hospital visit. Just eat the carbs.

6. Stay healthy.

Staying healthy and active throughout your pregnancy will help prepare your body for a better labor experience. Discuss your current exercise regime with your physician. Most women are still able to walk, work out, and even run while pregnant, but make sure you aren’t overdoing it! Diastasis recti – or the separation of abdominal muscles – can occur due to exercise for some pregnant women. Don’t worry! There are exercises to help you post partum if this happens to you!

The fun stuff

7. Track growth and development.

Download the Bump app or another pregnancy app to your phone. Turn on notifications so that the app can alert you each week about the size of your baby and what new things their tiny body is doing. It is exciting to see how big the baby is each week and see the changes that are happening.

8. Read! 

What To Expect When You’re Expecting is a great book for moms to track the grown and development of your baby through out your pregnancy. What To Expect When Your Wife Is Expanding is an educational, funny book for dads to learn about what Mom is going through and how he can help – and what not to say!


9. Decide when to tell friends and family.

Many women wait until the end of the first trimester to announce their pregnancy due to the increased chances of miscarriage during the first 14 weeks. Start thinking about how and when you want to tell your friends and family that you are expecting your little bundle!

10. Journal your pregnancy.

Write down the changes you are experiencing in your body and emotions. Record when you felt the first kick or even write notes to your baby to read when they are older. Pregnancy is a special time and every moment should be celebrated, even the days of morning sickness! Pregnancy is truly a miracle! And if you are fortunate enough and choose to have another baby, a journal makes it easy to look back and compare the first pregnancy to the next one!

Prepare financially

11. Start saving.

Kids are expensive. There is no way around it! Open a savings account early and put away as much as you can afford each month to help towards medical bills! Eventually, you will want to open a savings account for your baby as well.
